SmartBulb is an advanced smart lighting solution designed to improve sleep quality by addressing the negative effects of blue and green light exposure in the evening. Scientific studies have shown that artificial lighting, particularly from standard LED and incandescent bulbs, can interfere with the body’s circadian rhythm, making it harder to fall asleep and achieve restful sleep.

To tackle this issue, SmartBulb provides a specialized light spectrum that minimizes blue and green light emissions while maintaining a comfortable, warm illumination for evening activities. Users can replace their standard bulbs with SmartBulb to create a healthier nighttime environment without requiring complete darkness.

To enhance usability, SmartBulb needed a cloud-based infrastructure that would allow users to remotely control their lighting settings through a mobile application. This required seamless device-to-application, device-to-cloud, and application-to-cloud communications, a responsive and intuitive interface, and a secure, scalable backend architecture.

Scope of Project

Our team was responsible for the full development and integration, ensuring a seamless and efficient connection between SimpleBulb devices and the mobile applications. The key aspects of the project included:

1. Embedded Development

Fordewind successfully delivered embedded firmware development for a project built on the ESP32 architecture. The team implemented a robust, secure, and feature-rich solution that included the following key achievements:

  • Cloud Connectivity: Enabled seamless communication to the cloud WIFi, including low-latency, bi-directional communication.
  • Cybersecurity and Reliability: Developed firmware that ensures cyber-secure, safe, and reliable device operations.
  • Device Communication: Implemented Wi-Fi for cloud communication and Matter protocol over WiFi and Thread for effective, fast and secure local interactions.
  • Firmware Management: Implemented Over-The-Air (OTA) updates and streamlined firmware management processes.

The key point of the Firmware development is usage of the modern Matter protocol. Matter is the latest entrant in the smart home protocol arena, designed to simplify and unify device communication. With backing from tech titans like Apple, Google, and Amazon, Matter’s mission is clear: to create a seamless, open standard that prioritizes interoperability, security, and scalability. By leveraging IP-based networking, Matter allows devices to connect via Wi-Fi and Thread, making it versatile and easy to integrate into existing setups.

2. Mobile application development

Fordewind developed a robust mobile applications for Android and iOS, ensuring seamless communication functionality and an intuitive user experience.

  • Users can control devices locally (via Matter) and remotely via cloud communication
  • Users can turn the light on/off, adjust brightness, and select predefined lighting modes optimized for sleep
  • Real-time updates between the user’s web application and the smart bulb
  • Customizable scheduling to automate lighting adjustments based on sleep routines

3. Cloud-Based Infrastructure Development

  • Developed a serverless architectureusing AWS Lambda and API Gateway to minimize maintenance costs while ensuring scalability
  • Implemented AWS IoT Core to enable seamless communication between devices and the cloud
  • Designed a low-latency messaging system using MQTT and WebSockets to provide instant feedback on lighting changes

4. Security and User Authentication

  • Integrated secure authentication mechanisms (OAuth 2.0 & Firebase Authentication) to protect user accounts
  • Ensured end-to-end encryption for data transmission between devices and the cloud
  • Built-in role-based access control (RBAC) for multi-user support (e.g., family members controlling the same bulbs)

5. Performance Optimization & Scalability

  • Designed a scalable architecture that can support future product expansions, including integration with voice assistants (Alexa, Google Assistant)
  • Optimized backend processing to handle thousands of simultaneous connections without performance degradation
  • Implemented caching mechanisms(Redis or AWS ElastiCache) to speed up API responses
