SmartBulb is an advanced smart lighting solution designed to improve sleep quality by addressing the negative effects of blue and green light exposure in the evening. Scientific studies have shown that artificial lighting, particularly from standard LED and incandescent bulbs, can interfere with the body’s circadian rhythm, making it harder to fall asleep and achieve restful sleep.

To tackle this issue, SmartBulb provides a specialized light spectrum that minimizes blue and green light emissions while maintaining a comfortable, warm illumination for evening activities. Users can replace their standard bulbs with SmartBulb to create a healthier nighttime environment without requiring complete darkness.

To enhance usability, SmartBulb needed a cloud-based infrastructure that would allow users to remotely control their lighting settings through a web application. This required seamless device-to-cloud communication, a responsive and intuitive interface, and a secure, scalable backend architecture.

Scope of project

Our team was responsible for the full development and integration of the Device-to-Cloud Backend communication system, ensuring a seamless and efficient connection between SimpleBulb devices and the web application. The key aspects of the project included:

1. Remote Device Control

  • Users can turn the light on/off, adjust brightness, and select predefined lighting modes optimized for sleep
  • Real-time updates between the user’s web application and the smart bulb
  • Customizable scheduling to automate lighting adjustments based on sleep routines

2. Cloud-Based Infrastructure Development

  • Developed a serverless architecture using AWS Lambda and API Gateway to minimize maintenance costs while ensuring scalability
  • Implemented AWS IoT Core to enable seamless communication between devices and the cloud
  • Designed a low-latency messaging system using MQTT and WebSockets to provide instant feedback on lighting changes

3. Security and User Authentication

  • Integrated secure authentication mechanisms (OAuth 2.0 & Firebase Authentication) to protect user accounts
  • Ensured end-to-end encryption for data transmission between devices and the cloud
  • Built-in role-based access control (RBAC) for multi-user support (e.g., family members controlling the same bulbs)

4. Performance Optimization & Scalability

  • Optimized backend processing to handle thousands of simultaneous connections without performance degradation
  • Implemented caching mechanisms (Redis or AWS ElastiCache) to speed up API responses
  • Designed a scalable architecture that can support future product expansions, including integration with voice assistants (Alexa, Google Assistant)
